Goal

To bring down, into the scrotal sac, a testicle that never completed its journey and remains high (undescended). For best functioning and proper health maintenance in the future, the testis should live in the scrotal sac. Usually this is accomplished with one surgery (if the testis can be felt on exam) but sometimes (when the testis is so high we can't feel it) it may require several surgeries, staged months apart.

Benefits of the Procedure

Maximize chances for fertility in the future (testicles make sperm better in cooler temperature of sac), minimize risk of testis injury (testicular torsion), optimize surveillance (make it easy for doctors or patient himself to examine the testis (can catch problems early when easier to treat), and cosmetic (appearance of two testicles in sac).

Risks of the Procedure

Bleeding, infection, pain, damage to testis or structures around testis (vas deferens, blood supply to testis), testicular loss, recurrence of problem.
