Kidney (conditions relating to kidneys often called "Renal")

Swollen Kidney/Fluid in Kidney

Hydronephrosis

Can be temporary and resolve on its own

Can be a sign of blockage in the urinary system

Can be a sign of urine flowing in the wrong direction

Can be a sign of a high pressure bladder

Best seen on Kidney Ultrasound

Antenatal Hydronephrosis

Can go away completely after delivery or be a sign of urinary blockage, cysts, double kidneys or even urine flowing the wrong direction

Will require a Kidney Ultrasound a few weeks after birth

Partial Blockage of Kidney

Kidney drainage is impaired

Can be seen as Hydronephrosis on Kidney Ultrasound

Often requires MAG3/Dynamic Renal Scan Test

Often requires surgery (Pyeloplasty)


Double Kidney

Renal Duplication

Double kidney on one side

May have two drainage tubes or one

Tubes may insert wrongly causing blockage or backup of urine

Kidney in the wrong place

Ectopic Kidney

One kidney did not end up where it should be

Pelvic Kidney

One kidney is near the bladder

Horseshoe Kidney

The kidneys are joined together across the body and located in the wrong place

Only one Kidney

Solitary Kidney

Born with only one kidney (or only one working kidney)

Multicystic Dysplastic Kidney (MCDK)

One kidney has no function and is made up only of cysts (other kidney does all the work)
