Goal

To remove the part of the foreskin that covers the penile head (glans). Sometimes this is done for religious reasons, sometimes for cultural reasons or family tradition, and sometimes it is necessary for medical reasons (the skin never loosened properly and he has pain, infections or problems urinating).

Benefits of the Procedure

Prevents foreskin problems such as phimosis and paraphimosis, is easier to clean, reduces UTI risk in first year of life, makes it harder to pass along some sexually transmitted diseases to partners.

Risks of the Procedure

Bleeding, infection, pain (sometimes weeks before school age child gets used to sensation of penile head being exposed), penile adhesions, meatal stenosis, taking too much or too little foreskin, needing more surgeries in the future.
